Main Topic

A few impacts of the Iran war oil shock in Asia

  • Japan - Imports 90% of its oil from Middle East. Bank of Japan raised their interest rate to highest since 1995.
  • South Korea - their currency matched its lowest ever exchange rate against the dollar this year. The last time they were forced to do so was during 2008’s global financial crisis.
  • Philipines - has declared national energy emergency.

Size of current crisis in context- 1970s oil shocks severely affected prices but only cut global supply by 5-7% while current crisis affects 20% of world’s supplies
