Opportunities to Make a Difference

Option #1

Call on Biden to declare a climate emergency

While additional climate legislation requires Congress, an emergency declaration is something he can do today

It would provide important tools to lower emissions including

  • Ability to halt fossil fuel exports
  • Ability to stop billions in fossil fuel investments abroad

All the note needs to say is you're worried about climate change and you want Biden to declare a climate emergency. That's it!

This week's reason for hope

California has just filed a lawsuit against the fossil fuel industry

It’s suing major oil companies including Exxon, Shell, BP and Chevron for their deception about the dangers of burning fossil fuels

The lawsuit seeks to create a fund that would help with recovery efforts following wildfires and storms made worse by climate change

California joins a growing number of states including New York and Massachusetts that are suing oil giants for their disinformation campaigns

In a separate win, California just passed a bill requiring companies making over $1B and operating in the state to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas emissions

Fossil fuel deception and obstruction

In 2022, at COP 27 (the global climate summit in Egypt) there were over fossil fuel 600 lobbyists in attendance

In 2022, oil and gas industry spent $124M on federal lobbying in U.S.

In 1997, two months before Kyoto Climate Conference, Mobil released article in New York Times called “Reset the Alarm, which says: “Let’s face it: the science of climate change is too uncertain to mandate a plan of action that could plunge economies into turmoil.”

In 1990, Exxon funded two researchers, Dr Fred Seitz and Dr Fred Singer, who dispute the mainstream consensus on climate science. Seitz and Singer were previously paid by the tobacco industry and questioned the hazards of smoking.
